Cape Town - After making his return to SA shores after a European summer tour, Thembinkosi ‘Vimbs Mavimbs’ Mavimbela will be thrilling Cape Town audiences this coming week.

Vimbs Mavimbs is a prolific double bassist, composer, bandleader, producer and musical director.

He has played on some of the most iconic albums and performed in prestigious concert halls alongside exceptional musicians.

Vimbs Mavimbs has announced his highly anticipated returned to Cape Town after a successful show in Kalk Bay in July, and a return from the Summer European tour with the MIAGI Orchestra in Vienna (MDW), Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg, Konzerthaus in Berlin which lasted for three weeks. He continued to grace Belgium and Switzerland at the Willisau Jazz Festival with Asher Gamedze.

This coming Friday, 20 September, 2024 will see him perform at the The Athletic Club & Social in Cape Town.

The performance will mark the “becoming” of adulthood or “transitioning” into independency.

Vimbs Mavimbs is currently working on his debut album which is a jazz project that mirrors the eighteen year journey of trials and tribulations and it aims to celebrate life and heritage.

The project embodies the spirit of a millennial sound but without limitation with the inclusion of a traditional approach to jazz.

‘Late Bloomer’ is a sonic self-portrait with remnants of Mavimbs’ musical career, conceived in his late adolescence.

This work honours the ideology of ‘late becoming’, commemorating the initiation and transition process embarking on a new chapter.

It is inspired by the butterfly metaphor which symbolizes hope and transformation.
