THE first injured child from Gaza was brought to South Africa last Friday through the Gift of Mobility Campaign to receive medical treatment at the Raslouw Private Hospital in Gauteng.

Many children in Gaza have sustained severe injuries due to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas-led Palestinian militant groups. Some of the children are now travelling to South Africa for medical treatment.

The campaign is sponsored by Meal SA, the Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF), and the Raslouw Private Hospital.

Mira Baher Khaled, nine, was playing with friends when bombs exploded near her and she sustained a complex fracture in her right leg that required urgent medical treatment. Her operation is scheduled for this week.

In an interview with Hilaal TV, Dr Ismail Mitha, a representative of Meal SA, said: “Mira is nine years old. She was playing with some friends when bombs exploded and her leg was shattered. As a medical doctor, I am very passionate about the humanitarian crisis that is unfolding so I want to assist."

Another child was scheduled to arrive in South Africa this week.

According to a statement, the PCRF described the initiative as a "groundbreaking humanitarian effort in cooperation with our brothers and sisters in South Africa".
