THE DURBAN Lions Host Club established an Eco-School at Greenvale Primary School in Chatsworth today as a part of Mandela Day celebrations.
The Eco-School is aimed at allowing the school to be self-sustaining, and contribute to community upliftment.
The initiative was held in partnership with sponsors, including the Wildlands Conservation Trust that donated 450 trees for the project. The trees will be distributed to 70 schools in the south Durban area.
Pat Reddy, president of the Durban Lions Host Club, said he was proud to launch the initiative at the school, based in Westcliff, and encouraged other schools to contact the club about the project.
“The Eco-School project will allow schools to be self-sufficient and sustainable in terms of the climate action programme. We have created a functioning borehole and food gardens. There is also a recycling programme. Part of the project would be creating an artificial wetlands area, which is currently being designed for the school,” Reddy said.
The club urged other schools to be like-minded in making a difference through climate action.
“We are giving trees to 70 schools to motivate and encourage them to take action against climate change. We are proud that this was a successful initiative and we appreciate the support of our sponsors and partners. We hope for positive feedback from other schools,” Reddy added.
