Many officers in the dock

l Three police officers attached to the Protea Glen police station, Sizwe Nkwantsa, 30, John Ndlovu, 27, and Enos Magezi Manganyi, 47, appeared in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Monday on charges of fraud and defeating the ends of justice. They were arrested for soliciting a bribe from a man they had arrested for dealing in drugs.

l Gauteng police are investigating six police officers from Jabulani police station for allegedly stealing most of the R1.1 million recovered after a gang robbed a Soweto bank. Highly placed sources said the police allegedly claimed, after the arrest of the four suspects, to have recovered only R280 000.

l Soweto policemen Warrant Officer Bongimusa Brian Mthethwa and Warrant Officer Mandlenkosi Mchunu are facing corruption charges for allegedly soliciting a bribe from a motorist. They stopped a man in a bakkie and allegedly demanded R6 000 for driving a “stolen vehicle”.

l Police officers Shaun Crowder, Johan Smit and Modise Michael Mathibe were arrested together with lawyers, prosecutors and businessmen in what has become known as the Bread Case. They are charged with corruption, racketeering, extortion, defeating the ends of justice and conspiracy to commit perjury. The 14 are accused of working as a syndicate to manipulate the justice system.
