Cops among nine robbery suspects

THREE Soweto police officers and two former reservists accused of robbery have been remanded in custody during their second court appearance.

Moroka police station officers Sergeant Brenda Letsiela, 35, Tactical Response Team constables Trevor Mbalati, 27, and Rabelani Tshitakole, 29, and former reservists Zakhele Sikhosana, 27, and Bongani Mdakane, 31, made a brief appearance at the Protea Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

They appeared together with Letsiela’s husband France Ndlayane, 54, her cousin Musina Silasi, 57, her brother-in-law Richard Funani, 40, and France Madondo, 49.

The accused allegedly robbed the Witwatersrand African Taxi Association office of R160 000 on December 9 last year.

Letsiela was on suspension in connection with another case in which a shop in Langlaagte was robbed of R90 000 last year.

The nine are expected back in court for a formal bail application on Monday. – Poloko Tau
