THREE men accused of an ATM bombing and the killing of a Soweto police reservist appeared briefly in the Protea Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

Sifiso Shezi, 35, Hector Mabaso, 29, and Nkosinathi Masina, 28, have all been linked to an ATM bombing at a Total garage in Pimville in July this year. Kliptown reservist constable Busisiwe Mehlwana was shot dead after she and a colleague responded to a blast at the garage.

Masina was recently added as an accused in the matter, and now all three face charges of murder and ATM bombing. Shezi and Mabaso also face similar charges of murder and robbery with aggravating circumstances in Ladysmith, KZN.

Pictures of the suspects from CCTV footage were published in The Star, and this led to the arrest of Mabaso and Shezi. Two police officers from the Moroka police station were also accused of supplying the suspected robbers with ammunition.

Constables Authority Gamede, 29, and Vincent Hlubi, 35, have been released on R2 000 bail each and will appear in court again on October 27.

However, Shezi, Mabaso and Masina have all been remanded in custody for further investigations and will return to court on December 7. – Vuyo Mkize
