The tender warns contractors that “indicated arrangement sizes are under no circumstances to be regarded as the given size. To be discussed with the household managers before each delivery.”

Also, “The style of arrangements must be changed for every delivery,” and “Whatever the flowers are, they must be fresh. Only the best quality flowers and foliage to be used.”

No penny gum, not too much greenery, and hide the cheap plastic pots in something nice, instructs the tender.

There’s another tender for pot plants for the Bryntirion houses. Mahlamba Ndlopfu gets 47, Oliver Tambo House 17, with another 116 at the guesthouse to be looked after.

Once the country’s two top men get to work, their Union Buildings offices will also be well flowered – with at least 71 arrangements a week.

When there are functions at the Union Buildings, add another 36 arrangements. Another tender calls for 218 pot plants for the president’s and deputy president’s offices in the Union Buildings.

The four tenders mean the president and deputy president will together get 116 flower arrangements each week, and have 282 potted plants.
