Roads around the fire scene were affected by heavy traffic, and authorities advised motorists to avoid the area by using alternative routes.

Investigations are under way regarding the fire.

City of Joburg Emergency Management Services confirmed that its call centre received calls at about 4pm on Tuesday.

Voices heard in the videos seemingly of employees suggested that the fire started in the kitchen.

A source said staff members were seen running out of the building.

Johannesburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi confirmed that a team was dispatched to the scene.

“The City of Joburg EMS received a structural fire call around 4.20pm this afternoon. On arrival at Johannesburg Country Club, firefighter crews found the building gutted with flames. Three fire engines were dispatched to the scene, and fortunately, everyone managed to evacuate when the fire started,” said Mulaudzi.

“The fire has been contained in the kitchen, dining hall, and reception area. At the moment, the cause of the fire is still a subject of investigations,” said Mulaudzi.

People who witnessed the inferno recorded videos on their cellphones and shared them on social media.
