Johannesburg - Chair of the Chairs in the City of Joburg and GOOD Party councillor Lloyd Phillips says the party is fully behind Eldorado Park's "GunsDown" Movement.

He said that the movement formed earlier this year is aimed at reducing gun, drug, and gang violence in Eldos by applying political pressure on local law enforcement.

"Protesters from across political party and civil society lines have camped outside the Eldorado Park police station, demanding change. Some of these demands include a tracing operation to locate illegally acquired guns, the closing of drug dens, and the removal of Brigadier Maluleke from his office," he said.

Phillips said the movement didn't form in a vacuum; the area has been a den for gang leaders, drug dealers, and criminals for decades.

Phillips added that successive administrations have failed to make streets safer, costing the lives of countless men, women, and children. When politicians make promises and fail to deliver, they betray the trust of people who depend on them.

"Yesterday I joined activists, including GOOD members, outside the local SAPS station to show our support for this fight.

We call on the City of Joburg mayor and the MMC for public safety to meet community activists in Eldorado Park, discuss their concerns, and put together a plan of action to address long-standing criminality by drug lords and crime kingpins," he said.

He said that the current administration must provide a mechanism to monitor the performance of the newly introduced policing measures in Eldorado Park.
