Johannesburg - ANC MP Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma said she would remain a member of the ANC in whatever form should disciplinary proceedings take place against her after the election of President Cyril Ramaphosa for a second term.
There were talks that Dlamini Zuma would face suspension or other forms of disciplinary measures for voting against the party line in Parliament a few days ago.
Dlamini Zuma voted for the adoption of the Section 89 report, which had negative findings against Ramaphosa.
She was one of several ANC MPs who voted yes to the adoption of the report.
A few days after the parliamentary vote, Dlamini Zuma was served with a letter indicating that she would be facing a disciplinary process for not toeing the party line.
Speaking to The Star, she said: “I’m here and I’m an ANC member, a South African and an activist. I will remain in the service of the people in whatever form.”
On the day of nominations, Dlamini Zuma withdrew her name from the presidential race. This left Ramaphosa to go head-to-head with former health minister Dr Zweli Mkhize.
At the conclusion of the conference, Dlamini Zuma wished the ANC well for the next five years and the new leadership well as they lead the party to the next national elections.
“I think the ANC will strengthen and renew itself. There are challenges ahead in the country, and we need to all put our shoulders on the wheel to ensure that the challenges that people are facing are being attended to,” she said.
Divisions had been rife in the lead up to the conference, but Ramaphosa had called for cessation of hostilities among all factions in the ANC.
He said a divided ANC would be unable to serve the country and unify the country.
During the conference, outgoing ANC spokesperson Pule Mabe said the matter concerning MPs who failed to toe the party line would be dealt with by a process led by the new National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party.
The new NEC members were voted for on the last day of the conference.
Their names had not been announced.
