Johannesburg - Veteran broadcaster Pat Cash, real name Malik Maloyi, has accused YOU FM of withholding his October salary.

The former Kaya FM DJ was dismissed last week over allegations of sexual harassment and bullying against him. This is after a former female staff member accused him of bullying and sexual harassment.

Maloyi said he made a request to the station manager, Thabo Muridili, to pay him his salary for the month of October, which has not been paid yet.

"I made a request to you that I should be paid out and you promised to return to me 'in due course'. As you will know, I was suspended without pay for the whole of October, only to be fired based on a post by a former employee who once threatened to harm a female colleague. I have a family whose well-being is my responsibility, and failing to provide for them when I actually did work is a form of violence," Maloyi said.

Maloyi also accused the station of tarnishing his image, adding that this has put a strain on his life and that of his children.

"My daughter is getting confirmed in church in a few days. I am trying to shield her from the lies until past her exams because your source is working overtime to tarnish me.

“What I want to request is that you discharge your financial obligations in relation to termination and allow me to also cut my association with your station.

“You cannot keep me on a leash and afford yourself the advantage of withholding payment when you were clear about not wanting any association with me," Maloyi said.

"My life is and cannot be about what you choose to believe selectively. This has to end today. My family, like your families, has to eat and access medicine. I am not fighting."

The station said it takes matters of gender-based violence seriously and cautions against untoward behaviour from any of its staff. It said even though it has yet to verify the claims, the reputation of the station takes precedence, which is why it has acted swiftly following news of these incidents.

Maloyi added that the accusations against him were baseless and a ploy to assassinate his character.

"In the interest of free speech, I exercise my right to self-defence against character assassination and false innuendos about my conduct. I am not a good person; I am just an ordinary working-class person who is being bullied into submission by an entity not brave enough to amicably end a simple working relationship," he said.

"If I never work on radio again, I will have at least told the truth. I owe it to the women in my life and people in general for their support, which continues to humble me. This is not an expose, but a truthful account of what is documented as facts. The rest are just malicious rumours," Maloyi said.

YOU FM station manager Thaob Muridili said the station does not owe him anything.

He said Maloyi, whose termination of contract was made public last week, last worked for the station in September.

"We do not owe him anything. How can we owe him October's salary when he last worked in September? He is a freelance worker and is not owed anything," Muridili told The Star.
