MORE than 120 children will participate in next month's Phuza Water KZN Junior Golf Masters Tournament to be played at the Umhlali Country Club.

The tournament will take place on September 1 and will be contested over 18 holes for juniors with official handicaps in three divisions.

Experienced children without official handicaps will also be allowed to participate.

Girls and boys will play in the same division giving them the excitement to show their skills against each other.

Central Durban Golf Club (CDGC), hosts of the game, secured a sponsorship from Phuza Water to see children excel in the game of golf.

Following the success of the previous tournaments, Gustav Fortmann, owner of Phuza Water, volunteered to sponsor the games for the next two years.

Juggie Pillay, tournament director, welcomed the gesture and was overwhelmed that CDGC was recognised for the sterling efforts being made to promote the game of golf among children.

"It heartens us to see that people out there recognise the work we put in to see a new Papwa Sewgolum, Vincent Tshabalala, Tiger Woods or an Ernie Els emerge from our community.

"Some of the children that played in our tournaments have already represented South Africa in games overseas. That to us is a feather in our caps," said Pillay.

Pillay urged businesses to step forward in an effort to help children grow in the game of golf.

"It's the fastest growing sport in the world and the enthusiasm shown by children must be nourished so that we can help them gain confidence to make a name for themselves and bring honour to all of us," he said.

Entry fees are R300 for the 18 holes and R200 for nine holes.

There will be prizes, trophies, halfway meals and goodie bags.
