It’s almost spring, and the wedding season is upon us. Most South Africans prefer getting married in spring/summer because the flowers are blooming, the weather is warmer and everything seems so bright, making it the perfect time to tie the knot.

While the bride is usually the star of the day, guests are also expected to show up in style.

It can be tricky to pick the correct outfit as a guest because you must not outshine the bride, nor should you be underdressed for the big occasion.

Nick Drewe, trend expert and founder of the online platform Wethrift, has partnered with vintage dealer and Fashion Communication lecturer, Louisa Rodgers, to share insights on wedding trends and how to avoid upstaging the bride.

“When it comes to wedding guest trends this year, looks will be bold and bright, with vibrant and jewel-toned hues that pop, such as fuchsia, emerald green, and cobalt blue,” said Drewe.

“Floral prints will remain a popular staple for many, but we will be transported back to early 2000s minimalism with block colour dresses combined with big statement accessories such as cuffs, unusual necklaces, and avant-garde headwear, making a comeback.”

As a guest, there are certain looks that one shouldn’t go for at someone’s wedding. Unless the theme is white, like Somizi Mhlongo and Mohale Motaung did at their wedding, Drewe advises against wearing white.

“The easiest thing is to avoid wearing anything white to prevent upstaging the bride! Not only that but with many guests dancing and having a good time, white risks any cream-coloured look being ruined by stains,” he said.

“It’s also important to make sure you know what the dress code is. Most couples normally address this on their invites, but if you aren’t sure, you could double-check with other guests or the bride and groom what is suitable.”

Shoes are important because not only do they add more style to your outfit, but they also determine the kind of fun you will have. A wedding is a celebration so expect more dancing and you will not have a good time if you don’t have the correct shoes.

“Uncomfortable shoes are also a big one to avoid—they can be a vibe killer! Instead, make sure you opt for stylish, yet comfortable shoes, especially if you’re going to be on your feet, dancing for hours!

“If you love heels that can hurt your feet, bring a discrete, more comfortable pair you can change into later in the evening,” said Drewe.

One of the best ways you can stick to a budget if you have multiple weddings to attend this summer is to utilise what you already have in your wardrobe.

While no one likes to be an outfit repeater, there are many things you can do to make an outfit feel brand new.
