A sequel to “The Devil Wears Prada”,is in the works at Disney, almost two decades after the original hit movie was released.
The comedy, with its fresh dose of high fashion and hilarious one-liners, remains an all-time favourite for many across the globe, despite being released about 18 years ago.
It focuses on aspiring journalist Andy Sachs (Anne Hathaway) as she navigates the cut-throat world of fashion journalism as the assistant to the formidable Miranda Priestly (Meryl Streep), the editor-in-chief of “Runway” magazine.
The movie was adapted by Aline Brosh McKenna from the novel of the same name by Lauren Weisberger, a former assistant to Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour.
A musical version of the original film, with an original score by Elton John, also previously opened in London’s West End in October, with Vanessa Williams cast as Priestly.
As fans can’t get enough of “The Devil Wears Prada”, which stylishly celebrates the power of perseverance and self-discovery, key cast and crew are widely expected to return for the sequel, including McKenna, the director David Frankel and producer Wendy Finerman.
While it is unclear which of the original cast will be returning, Streep is reportedly reprising her role, alongside Emily Blunt, who played one of her assistants, Emily Charlton.
The sequel is supposedly yet another female power struggle at play as the storyline reportedly follows Priestly as she navigates the decline of traditional print publication in the digital space.
Her new key adversary is believed to be Charlton, who is in a position to make the decisions over where to place lucrative advertising contracts as she is a high-powered executive for a luxury consortium.
It is unclear whether Hathaway will reprise her role in the sequel as she told E! News in March that she was sceptical “a continuation of that story” was “ever gonna happen”.
It is also not not known if Adrian Grenier, who played the Hollywood actress’s boyfriend Nate in the original movie, as well as Stanley Tucci, who starred as Priestly’s long-suffering deputy, will return for the sequel.
“The Devil Wears Prada” raked in a whopping $326.7 million worldwide. It also earned Streep a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy as well as Oscar nomination. Costume designer Patricia Field also received a nod for an Academy Award.
And as Hathaway and Blunt went on to have illustrious careers after starring in the movie, “The Devil Wears Prada” was a breakthrough film for actresses.
All three leads have frequently reunited, most recently at the SAG awards in February. Earlier this year, Blunt and Hathaway revisited their experiences making the film as part of Variety’s Actors on Actors series.
“We just had a joy bomb of a time on that movie,” Blunt told Hathaway during the conversation. “I don’t know if any of us knew it was going to become what it did. It’s quoted to me every week. It will be the movie that changed my life.”
