The highly anticipated amapiano hit single, “Amalanga Awafani”, has officially been released but Mas Musiq and Lawd Weezy didn’t get the response they expected.
Fans dragged them for crediting everyone featured on the song, including DJ Maphorisa and TO Starquality, except Samthing Soweto.
What annoyed many people was that they used Soweto’s vocals but failed to credit him.
After the song was recorded a few months back, it couldn’t be released because Soweto wanted his share of the master and ownership rights.
"People need to learn how to share masters. We don't work for each other, we work with each other," said the “Nodoli” hitmaker in July when his fans asked him about the release date of the song.
When they released the song without crediting him this week, the singer responded on X with a broken heart emoji.
His fans took it upon themselves to report the song to be removed from Apple Music and YouTube, where it was released.
“I humbly ask everyone who believes that Samthing Soweto should have been credited on the song ‘Amalanga Awafani’ for his vocals to report it on iTunes. Here is how to do it. On the report, write ‘Samthing Soweto was not credited for being on this song’,” @PovertykillerB commented on X.
@Only_Botake added: “Samthing Soweto is such a humble guy, he honestly doesn't deserve this treatment from being used like this. He's the best vocalist and shouldn't be used so carelessly.”
Meanwhile, several industry insiders like content creator Phil Mphela supported the boycotting of the song to support Soweto.
“South Africans using their collective power for good today. Seeing all of you behind Samthing Soweto and reporting the song on YouTube is beautiful to watch. Enough is enough!” said Mphela.
Influencers like Sabelo The Kreator and Fikz The Cook also showed their support by reporting the song on Apple Music.
“If you guys really care about Samthing Soweto, please go to Apple Music, search the song, view credits and report the song for having missing credits. We cannot sit and watch Mas Musiq and Maphorisa profit off Sam’s talent,” commented @moesuttle.
When Independent Media Lifestyle called Mas Musiq for his side of the story, his manager answered and said: “What’s done is done.” He had no further comments.
However, seeing that Soweto was trending on social media, DJ Maphorisa went live on Instagram to address the issue. He was spitting fire and spoke how he helped many local artists build successful careers. He also spoke ill about Soweto and Sir Trill.
“Nang le yena Samthing Soweto wa lona wa mas*pa, akere lamorata? Nang le yena mara attitude ya hae ke mas*pa. Nang le yena, re tla bona otla bereka le mang coz everywhere atsamayang ko teng, otshwana le Sir Trill, ba tshwana, ba diagnosed the same. They plant rotten potatoes, everywhere they go ba senya. Aba itse selo and haba business minded. And look, talent won’t help you, bro,” said the furious producer.
His statement can be loosely translated to: “Stay with your sh*tty Samthing Soweto that you love so much. Stay with him and his sh*tty attitude, we’ll see who he works with because everywhere he goes, he ruins things.
“He’s just like Sir Trill, they plant rotten potatoes and ruin things everywhere they go. They know nothing because they are not business minded.”
Amapiano fans responded to Maphorisa’s live video, saying that he’s the vile one and what he said about Soweto was very telling about his character.
“Samthing Soweto is telling the truth … just listen to Maphorisa waffling about he stole ‘Adiwele’ and he thinks it’s something to be proud of…” commented @Gapeletsa.
There is a happy ending to the sage, the owners of the song buckled under the pressure from fans and eventually credited Soweto.
