Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has revealed how his side coped with the sudden departure of coach Rulani Mokwena.

Sundowns won the Pretoria outfits seventh league title in a row at the end of last season and it came as a massive surprise in SA football circles when reports first emerged that Mokwena and Sundowns would part ways due to ‘a broken working relationship’ at the beginning of July.

As big as a shock it was for the SA football public, it was even bigger for the Sundowns players.

Though Sundowns are the dominant force in the Betway Premiership, Williams said the club had not achieved its full potential yet.

Pressure on Sundowns

"We all became very close to [Mokwena] and we were achieving greatness, but the club took a different direction," the Bafana Bafana keeper told MSW.

Though the league only restarts this weekend, Sundowns have already been dumped out of the MTN8 Cup, at the hands of Stellenbosch FC.

It means the pressure will be on Sundowns to prove they are still the same force in the league.

"Yes, it is going to be difficult in the beginning but we can see what other people can’t see. We can see that we are one step away from being the Sundowns that people know. You can see the training; you can see it even in the games. We have been so unlucky in the games that we have played.

"Sometimes when setbacks happen so early, it is for even greater things to come. So, people should be careful to write us off too early and I am glad that it happened so early because now, it is going to ignite something different in us.”

The Betway Premiership gets underway this weekend.
