Recently relegated Cape Town Spurs have reportedly won their David versus Goliath battle against Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs, who were after their talented winger Asenele Velebayi.

The 21-year-old Velebayi was a stand-out player in the Cape side’s unsuccessful attempt to stay in the top flight last season, and looked set for a big move.

However, after Chiefs allegedly met with the player and his parents behind the Urban Warriors’ back, Spurs bosses have refused to let him go for anything less than R8 million.

“Asanele has played 99 professional games at the age of 21. Show me another 21-year-old with the experience that he has,” CEO Alexi Efstathiou was quoted by Hollywoodbets.

“We’ve been in the game for long and we know when we have a diamond, and Asanele is a diamond,” Efstathiou.

“Diamonds don’t get sold for cheap, unfortunately. If you don’t like the diamond, then don’t buy it. No one is forcing you to buy anything.”

Chiefs have already completed the signing of defender Rushwin Dortley from Cape Town Spurs in this window, but look like they will have to go elsewhere in their pursuit of a wide player.

Fortunately, they still have a number of days to go until the transfer deadline and the start of the new Betway Premiership season.
