Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro’s handling of teen star Relebohile Mofokeng has impressed South African football legend Jomo Sono.

Sono's name has been trending on social media for a number of days ever since he compared himself to Pirates’ Patrick Maswanganyi, and made the bizarre claim that his club Jomo Sono are the number one brand in South African football.

On Thursday, the former Bafana Bafana coach had good things to say about Riveiro’s management of the highly talented youngster, who has become an important player for club and country.

He brought up Orlando Pirates’ MTN8 semi-final against Cape Town City, where the experienced Thamsanqa Mkhize kept the teenager in his back pocked for much of the game.

“I think the coach at Pirates is doing a good job because twice I saw him pulling him [Mofokeng] off because the kid was starting to struggle. And a kid like that, the moment he starts to struggle, take him out, you’re protecting him, you’re building him,” Sono was quoted by iDiskiTimes on Thursday

“Mkhize was a bit stronger, physically he was a bit strong for him, even though he scored with the ball that was played over him but after that, he couldn’t go past him, he was shoving him all over the place, he was tackling him.

“But he has a bright future and he needs to be protected properly.”
