Kaizer Chiefs’ Jessica and Kaizer Motaung Jr say the door will remain open for Itumeleng Khune should he decide to continue his playing career at another club.

After the legendary goalkeeper’s contract expired at the end of last season, the club offered him a role as an ambassador, believing that his playing days had come to an end.

However, according to reports, the 37-year-old believes he still has something to offer, and has not accepted the club’s offer of an ambassadorial role.

Addressing the issue with Robert Marawa on MSW on 947, sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr said: “The club was very honest in terms of our communication and how we addressed the Khosi faithful when he signed his last contract.

“Everyone can agree that what he’s achieved at this club is remarkable. His story is something that is very inspirational. It’s a big yardstick to anybody coming in now if they can achieve what he’s achieved,” Motaung said diplomatically.

“From a playing perspective now, as you can see with bringing in Fiacre [Ntwari], we’re looking towards the future,” he said, adding the veteran goalkeeper had an offer on the table to work in the club’s marketing department.

And should Khune decide to leave the club to continue his playing career elsewhere, both Motaung said the offer would remain on the table.

“Itu is a club legend. The door is always open for Itu. If there’s one club in the PSL that has that door open for legends, for former players, I think it’s ours.

“If you look at the personnel within the club, around the club, around our youth structures, we do very well. Itu is a club legend and the door will always be open for him.”
