Despite a promising start to the new season, Kaizer Chiefs are likely to face a tough challenge against defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
The Soweto giants have begun the season impressively, securing wins against Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu, climbing to third place in the league table.
This strong start has re-energised their loyal fan base, who had endured the club’s struggles in recent seasons and were often ridiculed by rivals.
Some fans have even declared that the mighty Amakhosi could win the league this season, a feat that would end the club’s nine-year title drought. However, there is a strong possibility that these high hopes could come crashing down on Saturday.
While Chiefs have won their opening games, it's important to note that they have faced a newly promoted Betway Premiership team in Marumo Gallants and an AmaZulu side that has finished outside the top eight for consecutive seasons.
Even against these opponents, Chiefs appeared vulnerable at times, with unconvincing performances.
Considering the club’s significant investments, it was expected they would win these matches, as any other result would have been seen as a failure.
Sundowns, on the other hand, present a far greater challenge. Like Chiefs, they have also won their opening games and currently sit atop the Premiership table, a familiar position for the Tshwane side.
Chiefs have struggled against Sundowns in recent seasons, losing four of their last five encounters with the reigning champions.
While Chiefs have bolstered their squad with talented players such as Gaston Sirino and Inacio Miguel, Sundowns still boast a stronger and more cohesive team.
Their players have experience playing together at the highest level of African football, while nearly 70% of Chiefs’ starting line-up consists of new signings still settling into the team.
Unlike Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu, Sundowns are expected to be more clinical in front of goal.
Given these factors, Kaizer Chiefs will likely fall short against Mamelodi Sundowns and their fans should manage their expectations accordingly.
