Johannesburg - Referee, Ghana's Joseph Lamptey, who awarded a contentious penalty in favour of South Africa in their World Cup qualifier on November 12 has been suspended for three months for poor performance by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). South Africa went on to win that match 2-1 against African powerhouse Senegal.
Afterwards, the Senegalese Football Federation justifiably lodged a complaint with CAF aimed at the official. Lamptey received the suspension from CAF for “awarding a wrong penalty for a handball despite the fact that the ball never touched the hand of the player”.
Replays showed the ball did not even come close to striking the hand of the defender, when in fact, the player used his hip to block the ball.
It is not the first time that Lamptey has been suspended for poor performance.
In 2010, he was suspended for six months for a controversial decision in the CAF Champions League semi-final between Al Ahly and Esperance.
