Proteas coach Rob Walter has named the squads set to face Afghanistan and Ireland in limited overs series in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) this month.

The Proteas will kick off their white ball tour with a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan and proceed to play against Ireland in two T20Is and three ODIs.

DP World Lions spinner Nqaba Peter and Dolphins all-rounder Jason Smith have been called up for the first time in the ODI set-up.

Fast bowler Lungi Ngidi makes a return to the team and has been included in all three squads following his recovery from a calf injury.

Walter who has opted to rest key players such as Kagiso Rabada, David Miller, Marco Jansen and Heinrich Klaasen stressed the need to build squad depth with major tournaments on the horizon.

“We have decided to give opportunities to some of the fringe players as well as those who have impressed in recent weeks and months.

“This has been a deliberate move from management, in line with our goal of building a wider pool of players to choose from, as we prepare for the major ICC tournaments taking place over the next 18 months, with a long-term view on the 50-over World Cup in 2027.

Walter says he is confident that the tour will offer some of the new players in the side much needed international exposure.

“There is no doubt that tours such as these offer us this unique opportunity to provide players with international exposure in different conditions compared to what they are used to.

“I am particularly looking forward to seeing how some of the more experienced players step up, whilst keeping a close eye on who can grab this opportunity and become more regular within the national set-up.
