ANC pays tribute to actor Darlington Michaels

The ANC has paid tribute to actor Darlington Michaels, popularly known by his stage name “Bra Georgie Zamdela” on ‘Isidingo’.

In a statement on Saturday, the party said it was saddened by the tragic passing of the famous actor.

“The ANC pays tribute to this legendary and famous veteran actor of impeccable credentials. His contribution to the arts and entertainment industry over the years was inspirational and has motivated many people in the arts industry. His legacy will endure in the hearts of many. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Michaels family at this time of bereavement,“ the party said.

According to ZiMoja, the legendary actor has not been feeling well for weeks and was admitted to Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital in Soweto last week.

He died on Friday at the age of 78.

The actor became a household name for his portrayal of the mining town gangster after joining the SABC popular soap opera Isidingo in 1997.

In a statement, the public broadcaster said: “The SABC is deeply saddened by the passing of the legendary Darlington Michaels. His immense contribution to the entertainment industry will forever be remembered. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Michaels family, friends and fans.”

According to a family statement, Michaels is survived by his wife, two children, six grandchildren, friends and countless fans who mourn the end of his life and celebrate his immense contribution to South African television.

Former fellow Isidingo actress, Kgomotso Christopher, speaking told SABC News his loss was a huge blow to the acting industry.

“His loss is a big blow to the industry. Ironically, this morning I came across one of his images and I did not know that he was gone. I got a message from my mom who told me that he had passed away.

“I am grateful to have had the honour and privilege to have worked with him ... He was a living legend. He was a level-headed and chilled guy. He was a very soft-spoken and sweet gentleman,” she said.
