Johannesburg - This week we feature reality TV star and musician Kaige Bertasso.
The 23-year-old is best known for featuring on the hit reality show Love Island South Africa.
The Durban-based tennis coach, who looked for love on the first season of the popular show, was unsuccessful and ended up being the first one to exit the show voluntarily. In the end, he discovered his passion for music, and it has borne fruit.
Last week, he released his song “Finding me” on all major digital platforms.
You are able to go and watch any artist live in concert anywhere around the globe. Who do you choose to watch and why?
I think if I could go watch anyone live it would definitely be AC/DC. They have been my favourite band ever since I was a little kid growing up. To see them live and performing would be a dream come true. I love rock ’n’ roll and that whole era of music; I definitely consider myself an old soul and relate a lot more to that era of music.
Tell us about the worst date you've ever been on...
I went out with a girl who from the get-go had me thinking, well this is going to be fun. I opened the car door for her, and she said she can do it herself, then when I pulled out her chair at the restaurant, she said she is not crippled.
Then, the whole night’s conversation was led by how much money she has and that she doesn’t need a man to pay for her but me being me and how I was raised, I was always going to pay. It’s a first date, it’s the right thing to do; however, as soon as the bill arrived she ran off to the bathroom. So me wanting to test the waters I waited until she was back for the bill, she then proceeded to ask why I hadn’t paid. I simply asked her, so miss I don’t need a man to pay, why are you wanting me to pay? A whole long back story was given, so I cut it short, paid the bill and told her never to contact me again.
Your favourite item of clothing in your closet currently is?
Definitely Jordan 1s. I have so many different pairs and I honestly want more. I’m obsessed with them. The only time they’re not on my feet is if I’m sleeping.
Your favourite restaurant in South Africa is? And what do you order?
My favourite restaurant in the whole of South Africa would probably be Tasca Pizza and 9/10 times I get the BBQ chicken pizza. Anything pizza related and I’m game.
What is the biggest regret you have in your life?
I don’t have any regrets in life. Every decision I have ever made has shaped me into the man I am today. Life is about learning and growing, and making mistakes is normal. If I didn’t do what I’d done, I wouldn’t be here today telling you about myself.
What is your definition of love?
For me the definition of love is kind, it’s caring, it’s patient, it doesn’t judge. It’s a feeling you can’t describe. It’s something that makes you do things you wouldn’t normally do for anyone else. For the people I love, I’d give the clothes off my back. It’s a safe place to be who you are, to be accepted and free.
You are on death row. You are given one last meal and a drink of your choice. What do you choose to have?
Definitely a pizza with all Italian cold meats on it, like salami, parma ham, chorizo, mortadella, prosciutto and a glass of Chivas regal whiskey, the 18-year-old bottle.
What Netflix show should everyone be watching right now?
My favourite show I’ve ever watched on Netflix was “Lucifer”. If you haven’t watched it, you are definitely missing out.
What one thing has caught your attention on social media in the last week?
My last week has been anything but normal for me. I have packed up my life in Durban and moved to the beautiful city of Cape Town with my girlfriend, so between the long drive from Durban to Cape Town and unpacking all the boxes and organising the move, I haven’t been on my phone much. The only thing I’ve really seen a lot of is the ending of the Formula 1 season as it’s something I love watching every Sunday.
Your idea of the perfect date is?
Sitting on the beach watching the sunset on a huge blanket with all my favourite types of sushi and a good bottle of red wine. Then as the sun sets completely, a bonfire is lit and we lay on the blanket looking at the stars whilst getting to know one another.
