Art ranging from a quirky wire sculpture by Pietermaritzburg’s Fanlo, “The Chicken Man”, to investment paintings by the likes of Walter Battiss, Pierneef and the De Jonghs, are among the lots for the Cannon’s Auctioneers two-day online auction of art, antiques and collectables on July 28 and July 29.
Bidding starts at 9am on both days. Fanlo, who died in 1995, used to sell his works on the stairs of The Tatham Art Gallery in the 1980s. His works have reached the international market and generate strong interest on auction.
The sign, with some strong words of encouragement in Latin, was made for the seller, a municipal employee who commissioned it for a work colleague.
The top lot in the art section is Walter Battiss’s Gathering at the Market, probably painted on his travels up the East Coast of Africa in 1964, and expected to fetch between R200 000 to R300 000.
Other investment works offer are by artists such as Pierneef; Gabriel and Thinus de Jongh; John Mohl; Errol Boyley; Christiaan Nice and Ephraim Ngatane. Among the other lots are Africana books and stamps; ceramics from all over the world; 18th-century longcase clocks; diamond rings and other fine pieces of jewellery; a German Sturmabteilung dagger; country furniture; silver tea sets and Persian carpets.
Viewing is on July 26 from 9am to 12.30pm and July 27 from 8am to 4pm, with Covid-19 regulations in place, at Cannon’s premises in the Lifestyle Centre in Hilton.
