Pretoria - Tshwane’s A Re Yeng buses will be interrupted today due to a strike by members of the National Union of Metalworkers of SA (Numsa) at the agency responsible for fare collection.
Union spokesperson Phakamile Hlubi-Majola revealed yesterday that the frustrated members at Extremetec have prepared to embark on the strike. She apologised for any inconvenience caused to commuters.
“We are the majority union, representing 190 out of 220 employees. We are warning commuters that the strike is likely to have an impact on the running of the City of Tshwane’s bus service.
“Our members feel compelled to embark on this drastic action because one of the core demands is the demand for transport allowance.
“Workers at Extremetec have to arrive at work at 4am. They knock off at 9pm, and there is no reliable transport available at that time. Workers spend a fortune paying for transport in order to make it to and from work.
“Our members are demanding a transport allowance of R2 500 and a night shift allowance of R60 per hour,” said Hlubi-Majola.
The transport allowance is a burning issue for workers at Tshwane Rapid Transit and for workers at Tshwane Affected Operators Investment.
Tshwane Affected Operators Investment is responsible for running the stations and Tshwane Rapid Transit for drivers and running buses.
The entire project is run by the City of Tshwane.
