The needy residents in Hammanskraal were assisted with applying for an indigent programme catering for those who can’t afford to pay for municipal services such as water and electricity.

This was during an outreach programme led by Deputy Mayor Nasiphi Moya at Mandela Hall, where residents also interacted with officials and political leaders about much-anticipated water supply from Klipdrift water treatment plant.

Moya said the outreach meeting was ahead of the roll-out of water from Klipdrift when the first phase of the plant expansion comes online in October.

Before May 29 general elections, residents were promised that they would start getting portable water through the Klipdrift plant in September this year.

It was said the plant would be upgraded from 42 to 92 megalitres a day and the project would take place alongside a long-term project to refurbish the Rooiwal waste water treatment plant.

On Monday, Moya described the water supply outreach meeting in Hammanskraal as being successful.

In attendance were Utility Services MMC Themba Fosi, Finance MMC Jacqui Uys, MMC for Economic Development and Spatial Planning Hannes Coetzee and municipal officials.

They interacted with residents about the first phase of water provision that will benefit residents in wards, 49, 73 and 74.

Moya said: “We ensured residents were able to interact with representatives from our indigent services offered by the Community and Social Development Services Department.”

She said residents who are unable to pay for municipal services were assisted with indigent registration.

“We have over 21 000 households who do not have registered accounts in Hammanskraal due to some residents living on tribal land and others having encountered issues with faulty water meters,”she said.

She said the City wanted to ensure that with the arrival of clean water to Hammanskraal, all residents have resolved the status of their accounts.

“This outreach programme was the beginning of many we plan to host in the coming weeks,”she said.

The City’s group financial services dealt with enquiries related to billing, meter readings, credit control and payment arrangements.
