Pretoria - In just a month, Tshwane metro police have reported two major breakthroughs in their anti-drug crackdown.
Offices arrested suspected drug dealers and seized drugs with a street value of more than R1 million.
In their latest drug operation this week, metro police nabbed five suspected drug dealers identified as Nigerian nationals in Garsfontein and recovered drugs with an estimated street value of R500 000.
The drug bust was reported after the metro police caught at least 11 Nigerian nationals on October 9 for being in possession of and dealing with drugs in Pretoria east. The drugs recovered last month were worth an estimated R680 000.
According to the Tshwane metro police, this week the officers responded to a tip-off on Tuesday about a white Suzuki Swift vehicle that was delivering drugs at Atterbury Road.
“The officers traced the suspect to his residence at a complex. Inside his unit they found four suspects busy packaging nyaope and crystal meth. They were all arrested for dealing and being in possession of drugs. The drugs found have an estimated street value of close to half a million rand.”
Meanwhile, executive mayor Randall Williams commended the metro’s Drug Unit for another successful major drug bust in Garsfontein, Pretoria East.
Williams said: “During the operation, five Nigerian male nationals were arrested for dealing and being in possession of drugs. The department responded to a tip-off about a white vehicle that was delivering drugs in Atterbury Road in Pretoria East.”
He said the officers traced the suspect to his residence where they found four suspects packaging nyaope and crystal meth.
“This drug bust follows another successful operation last month where 11 foreign national suspects were arrested for dealing and possession of drugs valued at nearly R700 000. I would like to thank our Drug Unit team for their excellent work in protecting our communities and young people from drugs.
“This should indicate to our residents that while we have some challenges with a few corrupt officers, the majority of our metro police members are committed to their job,” Williams said.
