In a major crackdown, Tshwane police arrested 345 suspects and recovered an unlicensed firearm in Mamelodi and Mamelodi-West during Operation Shanela.

Tshwane district police spokesperson, Captain Johan van Dyk, stated that the operation targeted key priorities, such as seizing unlicensed firearms, apprehending wanted suspects, and ensuring compliance with liquor licence regulations.

He added that the first phase of the operation resulted in arrests for gender-based violence (GBV), assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, murder, robbery, and rape.

“The Tshwane Detectives executed the first phase of the operation during the night, leading to the arrest of 296 individuals for serious offences, including 97 arrests for gender-based violence, 41 arrests for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, four arrests for murder, two arrests for attempted murder, five arrests for armed robbery and two arrests for rape.”

Van Dyk further stated that two tactical teams were deployed, and a roadblock was set up, leading to the detention of 38 undocumented immigrants who are now awaiting legal processing for deportation. Additionally, one individual was arrested and fined for employing illegal immigrants.

He stated that more suspects were arrested for drug dealing, money laundering, and violating the National Credit Act.

“Four suspects were arrested for possession and dealing in drugs, with 38 ziplock bags containing various substances and an undisclosed amount of cash seized. Two suspects were arrested for money laundering and non-compliance with the National Credit Act after they were found in possession of a large quantity of identity documents, bank cards, and cash,” said Van Dyk.

Another suspect was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Van Dyk reported that during the operation, police searched 686 individuals and 392 vehicles, testing seven to check for stolen status. This led to the arrest of a suspect found with a stolen VW Golf taken from Mamelodi-East earlier this month.

Traffic officials issued 155 AARTO infringement notices, totalling R62,550, while seven taxis were discontinued for violating the Road Traffic Act.

Van Dyk added that police searched and patrolled 25 identified premises and crime hotspots.

Additionally, three liquor establishments were inspected and shut down for Liquor Act violations, with 698,230ml of alcohol confiscated.

Major General Samuel Thine praised all members for their dedication and vital contributions to the success of Operation Shanela.
