What needs to be done to root out corrupt cops in the SAPS
As seven cops lined up in the Durban Magistrate’s Court accused of trying to extort R100,000 from a Phoenix businessman, issues around corruption in the South African Police Services (SAPS) reared its ugly head.
The cops, mainly from the Johannesburg Flying Squad, are accused of accosting a businessman at his premises, confiscating cigarettes and his firearms.
They are further accused of then driving the businessman to Phoenix SAPS and asking him to pay R100,000 in order to be released.
They accused him of selling counterfeit goods. The policemen were released on R7,000 bail.

‘He was my cadre’ Zuma pays tribute to Gordhan and reveals borrowing money from him
Leader of uMkhonto weSizwe party (MKP), Jacob Zuma paid tribute to the late former public enterprises minister Pravin Gordhan, and revealed that he once borrowed money from him to escape to Eswatini, to avoid being arrested during apartheid.
Zuma made the remarks while speaking at the funeral service of six MK Party members who died in a bus crash, while travelling to attend an event to honour his first wife, Getrude Sizakele Khumalo, popularly known as Makhumalo.
Gordhan, aged 75, died on Friday morning following a short battle with cancer.
Addressing the mourners, Zuma shared fond memories on how Gordhan used to be his close comrade and supporter, during his time as the chairperson of the African National Congress’ (ANC) Natal region in the 1970s.
Zuma said that he once borrowed money from Gordhan, to flee to Swaziland, in order to avoid being arrested.

Traveller dies after falling from parking level 5 at OR Tambo International Airport
Two passengers died in separate incidents at OR Tambo International Airport in Gauteng and King Shaka International Airport in Durban on Saturday.
In a statement, the Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) said in the first incident, officials at OR Tambo International Airport received a report at 3pm that a person had fallen from parking Level 5 to the ground level.
Acsa spokesperson Ernest Mulibana said law enforcement and airport health officials stationed at the 24-hour clinic were immediately alerted to the incident.

Deputy President Paul Mashatile is doing "well" after he fainted on stage and was rushed to hospital
Deputy President Paul Mashatile was rushed to hospital on Saturday afternoon after fainting on stage, the presidency said.
"While delivering his keynote address, the deputy president felt lightheaded from the heat and was attended to by his medical team," acting spokesperson for Mashatile, Keith Khoza, said.
"We can confirm that the Deputy President has received the necessary medical attention and is well."
Mashatile collapsed while he attended the N’wamitwa Day Celebrations held at Valoyi Cultural Village, Greater Tzaneen, Mopani District, in Limpopo.

One person has won the R107 million Powerball jackpot from the September 13, 2024 draw.
According to National Lottery Ithuba’s draw sheet there was just one winner.
The winner will walk away with a staggering amount of R107,768,939.56. The Powerball Plus jackpot was not won.
The jackpot is estimated at R36 million in the next draw (September 17, 2024) after rolling over for 12 consecutive times.

I’ve always enjoyed my Saturday morning sleep-ins, truth be told. Until a former work colleague, who I now consider to be a good friend, came and steamrolled over that comfortable habit.

Drawing up a will can give your loved ones a lasting legacy
This week is National Wills Week, which serves as a reminder for South Africans to get their affairs in order or risk jeopardising the financial future of their loved ones.
The initiative was introduced by the Law Society of South Africa to encourage South Africans to get their last will and testament drafted as well as address the statistic that seven out of 10 adult South Africans die without a valid will.
Dying without a will can result in families fighting over assets and money in long drawn out court battles or family members seeking the help of the courts to sort out estates.
One such case is the case of South African rapper Riky Rick, who died without a will.
