A conference on Public Innovation, Development, and Sustainability brought together top brains to Durban, KwaZulu-Natal to improve service delivery via innovation and technology.
The Department of Science, Technology, and Innovation (DSTI), local government, policymakers, and academics held a discussion to address difficulties and rethink public sector innovation strategy.
Dr Tshepang Mosiea, chief director of Innovation for inclusive development at the DSTI, discussed the relationship with the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), which hosted the two-day event.
Mosiea said it gave him great pride to note that they are making progress.
“Researchers, policymakers and experts including the private sector could support policy initiatives to ensure that as we advance to a knowledge society where technological singularity and the use of robots and humanoids become part of our society and are moderated, arbitrated and importantly do not produce unintended consequences,” he said.
Councillor Nkosenhle Madlala, who spoke during the conference, reiterated the City’s dedication to projects that put an emphasis on technology adoption, citizen participation, and cross-sector cooperation.
Madlala emphasised the city’s advancements in digital transformation, namely in cutting building project turnaround times and expenses.
“One of eThekwini’s stand-out achievements is the automation of rates clearance certificates, which will soon streamline processes for residents, conveyancers, lawyers and financial institutions, ensuring faster service delivery.
“Building resilient communities and promoting a sustainable future requires a multi-faceted approach,” said Mr Madlala.
The head of UKZN’s School of Built Environment and Development Studies, Professor Ernest Nene Khalema, emphasised the vital role that cross-sector cooperation plays in promoting sustainable development.
“We are witnessing the convergence of ideas from government, academia, the private sector and civil society. These partnerships are essential for creating innovative, sustainable solutions that address the complex challenges we face today,” he said.
