The Executive Committee (EXCO) of eThekwini Municipality has approved an additional R3 million for the urgent replacement of the furnace at the oThongathi Crematorium, raising the total project investment to R8 million.
The facility’s only operational furnace suffered a complete failure on January 24 after years of breakdowns.
A technical assessment confirmed the inevitable: the furnace had reached the end of its lifespan and needed full replacement.
eThekwini Mayor Councillor Cyril Xaba hailed the swift action by EXCO as a vital step towards restoring cremation services to the area.
“We are pleased that EXCO has responded swiftly to this urgent matter,” he said.
“The failure of the furnace has left many families without access to cremation services in the area. This funding will allow us to expedite the process and restore this essential service.”
To cover the R3 million shortfall, the Parks, Recreation, and Culture Unit reprioritized its capital budget, ensuring the project stays on track without compromising other services.
A local South African-based service provider will soon be appointed to manufacture, construct, and install the new cremator.
The contractor will also be responsible for maintenance during a 12-month warranty period, with the option to extend services for an additional two years.
Mayor Xaba reaffirmed the City’s commitment to inclusive and respectful service delivery.
“We understand the cultural and religious significance of cremation for many communities,” he said.
“The urgent reprioritisation of funds demonstrates our dedication to ensuring that all residents have access to essential municipal services.”
