Dr Sifiso Maseko has resigned as uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party secretary-general and will assume a new position as chief director for infrastructure in the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH).

Maseko has previously worked at the department before he was suspended for corruption.

MKP spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndlhela confirmed to IOL that Maseko stepped down from the party to join the department. He will remain a party member.

In his resignation letter, Maseko explained that his decision was a hard one to take but he had to because of his conditions.

“Furthermore, I wish to unconditionally extend my heartfelt and warm-felt appreciation for the collective leadership under the stewardship of the President and the members of MKP at large.

“I will always be available for any deployment by the MKP leadership but not in the capacity of being an office bearer due to the imminent changes in the legislative framework to apply to public servants…

“I remain a member of the MKP and commit to serving in any capacity deemed necessary by the party, including retaining my role as a member of the National High Command,” the letter read.

Following the Special Investigating Unit's (SIU) report's findings, Maseko and eight other government officials were suspended from 2022.

The SIU investigated anomalies in the department’s acquisition of personal protective equipment (PPE) during the National State of Disaster, which involved several service providers.

The SIU's findings led it to recommend that six officials from the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development (GDID) and three officials from the GDH, including Maseko, face disciplinary and criminal action.

He was on suspension with full pay.

MKP has expressed gratitude to Maseko for his service and his commitment to his job as secretary.
