As global consumers increasingly seek environmentally conscious products, the coffee industry is evolving to meet these expectations through innovative sustainability efforts. Leading the charge in this transformation is Jacobs, a brand committed to reducing its environmental footprint while offering premium coffee experiences.

Through its sustainability program, the company has made substantial progress in minimising waste and emissions across its operations. Notably, over the past year, the company has saved 3,000 tons of glass by reducing the weight of each jar by 10-15%. This is part of a broader strategy to transition to recyclable or compostable packaging by 2030, reflecting their' end-to-end commitment to sustainability.

The company’s sustainability mission is not limited to packaging. The company has adopted a comprehensive end-to-end sustainability strategy, working closely with partners across the supply chain to reduce emissions and waste. This includes using spent coffee grounds as fuel in their instant coffee factories and developing more energy-efficient production processes. By focusing on innovation and renewable energy, the company is making strides toward a planet-positive future.

"We are deeply committed to reducing our environmental impact and are proud of the progress we’ve made," says Domaine Rautenbach, Senior Brand Manager at Jacobs. "Through continuous innovation and collaboration with our partners, we aim to drive meaningful change in the coffee industry, ensuring a sustainable future for both people and the planet."

In response to the global challenge of deforestation, Jacobs is actively involved in reforestation projects across key sourcing regions. By partnering with local communities, the brand helps restore vital ecosystems, preserve biodiversity, and contribute to the long-term health of the planet. This aligns with their efforts to prevent deforestation and promote regenerative agricultural practices among coffee farmers.

Recognising the importance of water conservation, the brand has implemented advanced water management systems to reduce consumption and preserve water quality. In regions like Colombia, the company is empowering local communities with integrated water management training, ensuring that sustainable water use practices are in place for generations to come.

Jacobs is also exploring the use of biochar in coffee farming. This innovative technique helps improve soil health, enhances fertility, and captures carbon, contributing to the fight against climate change. By integrating biochar into their agricultural practices, the brand demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to creating a more sustainable coffee industry.

The brand’s commitment to sustainability goes beyond their operations. Consumers are encouraged to join the movement by adopting eco-friendly habits, such as upcycling packaging like the iconic Jacobs Jewel Jar, designed with reuse in mind. Additionally, small acts like reusing coffee grounds for composting can collectively make a significant impact on the planet.

As nearly 47% of global consumers express willingness to pay more for products made from sustainable materials, Jacobs is at the forefront of this industry-wide shift. With its ambitious goals of sourcing 100% responsibly grown coffee by 2025 and making all packaging recyclable or compostable by 2030, the brand continues to innovate and inspire positive change.
