Professor Nokuthula Sibiya has been appointed as Mangosuthu University of Technology’s (MUT) first female Vice-Chancellor since the institution was established 45 years ago.
The KwaZulu-Natal university announced her appointment on Friday. She will assume her position on August 1.
MUT said her appointment is a testament to its legacy of shaping future leaders and contributing significantly to South Africa’s socio-economic development.
It added that Professor Sibiya’s vision for MUT is centred around academic excellence, financial sustainability, and socio-economic development.
“She aims to enhance the university’s research capabilities, promoting interdisciplinary collaborations and establishing cutting-edge research centres.
“Her strategic plan includes the introduction of globally competitive academic programs that align with industry needs, ensuring that MUT graduates are well-prepared for the future,” said the university.
Reflecting on her appointment, Professor Sibiya said she was honoured to lead MUT and added that the appointment is a collective victory for all women who aspire to break barriers and lead with purpose.
“I am committed to building on MUT’s proud legacy and working collaboratively with our faculty, staff, and students to drive excellence and innovation. Together, we will create a vibrant and inclusive university that empowers our students and contributes meaningfully to the development of our society,” she said in a statement.
On Thursday, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced Judge Mandisa Maya as the new Chief Justice.
Maya is the country's first female Chief Justice.
Maya will assume her position on September 1, replacing Chief Justice Raymond Zondo, whose term ends on August 31. She was president of the Supreme Court of Appeal before she was appointed Deputy Chief Justice.
