Two suspected hitmen, who who were allegedly on their way to carry out a murder, were killed in a shoot-out with police.

The incident took place in Mahlabathini in the Zululand District on Wednesday evening.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said police received information about two suspects who were travelling in a red VW Polo and were allegedly on their way to assassinate a taxi owner in Mahlabathini.

“The intelligence was operationalised and the suspect’s vehicle was spotted driving along the P700 road in Mahlabathini,” Netshiunda said.

“Police used blue lights and sirens to instruct the driver of the vehicle to pull over.”

Netshiunda said the driver of the vehicle stopped in the middle of the road, and two occupants of the vehicle got out and opened fire in the direction of police.

“Police officers returned fire and a shoot-out ensued. During the shoot-out, two suspects were shot and fatally wounded. Three firearms and ammunition were found in the possession of the suspects.”
