A suspected criminal was killed in the early hours of Wednesday morning in the Cato Manor area in Durban.

ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson they responded to a shooting incident at around 1.30am.

“On arrival paramedics found the area cordoned off and multiple SAPS and security personnel in attendance.

“Paramedics found that an alleged suspect had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was declared deceased on the scene.”

He said paramedics also found that a policeman had been struck by a bullet in his bullet proof vest during the gun fight.

“Fortunately the bullet was stopped, however, the patient was treated and transported to hospital for minor injuries.”

The South African Police Services (SAPS) have been approached for comment and will be added once received.

A number of suspects have been killed in shoot-outs with cops in recent weeks.

The suspects have been linked to murders, robberies, extortion.

Following the shooting incident the KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi responded to certain critics referring to police as a vigilante group.

"I wouldn't want to argue much with those who call us vigilante groups. Our (job) is law enforcement and we are going to protect them as well. They can call us vigilante groups, but if their lives are under threat, we are going to protect them," he said.

The Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu also promised to take strong action against rising crime levels in the country, citing that crime levels are “increasing and intolerable”.
