When a KwaZulu-Natal security company called to a bush along the R102 highway in Verulam, KZN on Monday, they had expected to find yet another grim discovery of a body.
But in a bizarre twist of events that left them stunned, the body was in fact that of a 60-year-old man who was in fact just sleeping the a bush
According to eyewitnesses, the man was mistaken for a deceased body, prompting a call to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA).
Upon arrival, RUSA members discovered the man alive, but disoriented and struggling to explain his situation.
"On arrival, reaction officers entered a dense bush and found a man on the ground, his upper body was covered with a black refuse bag", said Prem Balram of Reaction Unit South Africa.
"The man woke up after officers removed the refuse bag."
The man, who has not been named, claimed to have spent the night in the bush due to financial constraints. He stated that he resides in Ndwedwe, northern KZN, and was stranded in Verulam.
The man also mentioned that he made a living out of making toys from wire.
As authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, concerns are being raised about the welfare of vulnerable individuals in the community.
The authorities were informed and they reached out to help him.
Balram said the incident has sparked a mix of shock, concern, and compassion among Verulam residents.
