The tranquility of the mangroves along the Umgeni River was disrupted on Monday when a member of the public discovered a man's body, sparking a murder investigation.

Marshall Security managing director Tyron Powell said that at about 12.40pm on Monday, a member of the public flagged down a Marshall Security armed response officer on Riverside Road.

A member of the public said they saw a body in the mangroves along the Umgeni River.

“Our armed response officer immediately stopped to assist and confirmed the presence of the body of an approximately 30-year-old male lying within the mangroves,” Powell said.

“The officer promptly called for further assistance from members of our Special Operations Team and Greenwood Park SAPS.”

“Upon arrival, the Special Operations Team cordoned off the crime scene, as foul play is suspected. A trail of blood was observed leading from the Riverside Road pedestrian walkway down to the location of the body, and a knife was also discovered at the scene,” Powell continued.

He said the Greenwood Park SAPS arrived shortly after and opened a murder case.

“Due to the difficult terrain, SAPS and Metro Police Search and Rescue teams were also called in to assist with the retrieval of the body. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident,” Powell said.

KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo confirmed the body of an unidentified man was discovered on Monday.

Ngcobo said the man had bruises on his body.

“Greenwood Park police have opened a murder case,” Ngcobo said.
