The Mpumalanga Police leadership successfully handed over 74 vehicles to various police stations and units across the province, as well as to the Community Policing Forum (CPF), in a ceremony held at the Steve Tshwete Local Municipality Banquet Hall in Middelburg recently.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Donald Mdhluli said the vehicles are expected to address the outcry by various communities that police were not adequately resources to respond to crime.
Speaking during the function, the MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Jackie Macie said that the new vehicles are a significant milestone towards the collective efforts of building safer communities in the province.
He added that the vehicles will also enhance the capabilities of the police and enable them to serve the communities more effectively.
"We urge for the effective use of the vehicles to address various categories of crime, including car hijackings, through coordination with other stakeholders such as the South African National Defence Force (SANDF)," said Macie.
Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi, Acting Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, highlighted the commitment of the police management to ensure that officers are well-equipped to serve and protect the community. The collaboration with the office of MEC Jackie Macie will continue to strengthen the capabilities of the SAPS in combating crime.
Brigadier Donald Mdhluli said that the recipients of the vehicles expressed gratitude for the allocated assets and pledged to maintain and utilize them to their fullest potential in serving the community with pride.
The SAPS and CPF will continue to work together to enhance safety and security in Mpumalanga.
