Police in Mpumalanga are investigating the death of a 74-year-old resident whose body was found in a manhole on Friday.
Ernest Ranchmann was reported missing at Watervalsbank farm in Leslie on November 1.
Provincial police spokesperson, Captain Magonseni Nkosi, said Ranchmann's body was discovered on Friday morning.
"Authorities were informed after cow herders noticed a smell coming from a manhole.
"According to information, a handgun with live ammunition and one spent cartridge case was also found,“ Nkosi said.
Ranchmann was reported missing after his family could not reach him to wish him for his birthday.
"His family made several calls to him to wish him a happy birthday with no success. The matter was reported to the police. They went to his house at the farm upon arrival, and they found the door opened. His valuables, including vehicle and cellphone, were found in the house," police said at the time.
"Circumstances surrounding his mysterious death are subject to investigation," Nkosi added.
