Eight men are expected to appear in court after they were found in possession of police uniforms, illegal firearms and SA Police Service (SAPS) bullet proof vests.
The suspects, aged between 29 and 55, were arrested during a police-driven operation in Jozini Town, in northern KwaZulu-Natal, on Thursday afternoon.
KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said police received a tip-off from a member of the public about a suspicious vehicle with eight occupants which was “doing the rounds in town”.
He said police acted on the information and a swift stop-and-search operation was executed.
“The vehicle fitting the description as explained by the vigilant resident was spotted at Jozini Town and was stopped by police.”
Netshiunda said when police searched the vehicle they found three firearms.
He said the serial numbers of the firearms were filed off.
“Several rounds of ammunition as well as pieces of police uniform, including a bullet resistant vest were also found.”
Police said the serial number of the bullet resistant vest indicated that it belongs to police in Vryburg in the North West.
“The suspects vehicle was also seized for further investigations.”
This week police in KZN said two suspected hitmen on their way to assassinate a taxi boss was killed in a shoot-out with police.
The incident took place in Mahlabathini in the Zululand District on Wednesday evening.
