Given the essential service that they provide and the many long hours worked on the road, truck drivers are in many ways the unsung heroes on South Africa’s roads.
Given that their health is often prone to being neglected, given the pressures of their job, one of South Africa’s major fuel retailers is offering complimentary health screenings to truck drivers on key routes this October, which is Transport Month.
Engen will be offering these health screenings at 29 of its 1 Stop and Truck Stop locations around the country throughout the month.
Fixed mobile clinics will be stationed at Harrismith Highway Junction, Beaufort West, Musina Gateway, East London Kempston, Port Elizabeth Gone South and Kokstad. Mobile clinics will be located at the following locations on the specified dates:
These mobile clinics will be staffed by qualified nurses and counsellors, who will offer screenings for blood pressure, Body Mass Index (BMI), cholesterol, tuberculosis (TB), diabetes, malaria and HIV/AIDs. Counselling and condom distribution will also be available, Engen says.
Furthermore, Engen will continue its partnership with the Safer Stops Association (SSA), which is an initiative focused on serving drivers at truck stops with healthier meal options as well as exercise amenities and adequate rest areas for recuperation following long hours spent on the road.

Given the long hours they spend on the road and the challenges they face, initiatives like Engen Driver Wellness play a crucial role in supporting both fleet owners and truck operators, ensuring that their operations are Always Moving,” said Engen Business Development Manager Adnaan Emeran.
