This Rangie offers superlative luxury

If, by some strange chance, the Royal family just so happens to make a grand entrance at the Geneva Motor Show in March, there is one vehicle they will almost certainly be viewing first.

Land Rover will be using the show to unveil the most luxurious Range Rover ever created.

Only 500 examples of the Range Rover Autobiography Ultimate Edition will ever be made. The flagship model adds a handcrafted luxury interior, using specially selected soft feel natural leathers.

But the real ball is in the back, where the rear passengers now experience first-class accommodation like never before seen in a Range Rover. Two standalone electric rear seats basically turn this Range Rover into a chauffer vehicle.

And this is not just pompous luxury of the old-fashioned variety either - there's also a rear console extension that houses a machined aluminium laptop table and drinks chiller as well as two Apple iPads that come with the car (an automotive first).

Even the boot has been given the first-class treatment, with a yacht-inspired teak floor with metal and leather detailing.

The interior story is completed with high-end semi-aniline leather seating and Oxford leather on the door casings, dashboard top and steering wheel. For the first time, Kalahari wood veneers are used on the facia and door top rolls and unique interior colourways of either dark cherry or Arabica are available.

Range Rover aimed to create an equally sophisticated exterior finish, with a dark atlas grille and side vents and a choice of two new bespoke exterior colours (Roussillon Red or Otago Stone), with Santorini Black also available in some markets. Further dazzle is provided by unique 20-inch diamond-turned alloy wheels.

Customers can also choose between petrol and diesel engine options, the former being Land Rover's 230kW 4.4-litre TDV8 and the latter is the supercharged 5.0-litre V8 with 376kW on command.

The 500 units that are made will be dispersed among 20 markets around the globe, with the UK price expected to hover around the R1.5-million mark. We are currently awaiting Land Rover South Africa's response on whether we're one of them.
