What did car-company marketing mavens do before the advent of social media? According to Porsche, this is a photo of the 'latest production version' of the hybrid 918 Spyder and it went out yesterday to the world's Porsche groupies - on Twitter!

The plug-in hybrid 918 - which has a mid-mounted 4.6-litre petrol V8, two electric motors and a 6kWh lithium-ion battery for a total of 661kW and more than 800Nm - is making its North American debut this weekend at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in Monetery, California and the one in this picture looks exactly the same to us as the one that howled up the hill at the recent Goodwood Festival of Speed.

In fact, it's probably the same car, cleaned up, detailed and polished to within an inch of its life.

The standard at Pebble Beach is so high that, even if you are displaying a non-competing modern car, if it's not shiny enough to take top honours anywhere else it will look like a poor relation - which is not what you want for 'the sports-car of the future', now is it?
