Meet Mr Minagi - it won't teach you any special moves but it is aiming to send shivers down the spines of all the fighters in the compact SUV market - Kia Sportage, Toyota RAV4 and VW Tiguan, you have been warned.

Technically the Mazda Minagi, which we see for the first time via these official sketches, is just a concept car. Yet its announcement comes barely a month after we brought you the news that Mazda is planning to launch a compact SUV in 2012; so what you see here must be a good indication of what's to come.

Set to wow the crowds at its first official unveiling at the Geneva Motor Show in March, the Minagi concept showcases Mazda's new Skyactive technologies, while also being the second concept car to display the Japanese brand's new Kodo design language - which means 'soul of motion' by the way.

While it seems there could be an ounce of frustration involved here, Mazda describing the design as communicating "pent-up energy bursting with vitality as the vehicle nimbly navigates a sprawling urban cityscape," the concept should qualify as sexy to most eyes.

Which will bode will for the production vehicle, that's likely to be called the CX-5, if its design closely follows that of the Minagi concept.

According to previous reports, the production vehicle will be based on a modified version of the Mazda3's undercarriage and will make use the Japanese brand's all-new (and highly advanced) Sky-G (petrol) and Sky-D (diesel) engines.

The concept car not only showcases these efficient new engines, but also the Skyactiv weight-reducing body and chassis technologies that ensure this fighter does not have an ounce of unwanted fat.
