Mazda is busy developing a new electric vehicle and plans to start leasing them to selected customers in Japan as early as the second quarter of next year.

The new EV, based on the Mazda2, is expected to have a driving range of 200km and will be leased mainly to local government bodies and fleet users.

Through the lease initiative, Mazda aims to improve its knowledge of EV usage requirements in everyday motoring and the practical demands placed on electric drive technologies.

Despite this, Mazda expects the internal combustion engine to remain at the heart of the automobile for the near future.

Consequently, going forward, Mazda will continue to improve its base technologies that are centred on internal combustion.

At the same time, it will advance development of various eco-friendly technologies for the future in order to offer all its customers driving pleasure as well as outstanding environmental and safety performance.
