85kW, 200km range: Audi A2 detailed

It may look as if it was styled by a refugee from Kelvinator, but this, Audi would have us believe, is the future of urban motoring - and it has promised a production version within two years.

Whether that will have the concept's pulsing light strip acting as an indicator repeater - all the way down the side of the body below the windows - is dubious, but nevertheless, these extraordinarily detailed computer-enhanced pictures of the A2 battery-powered concept, scheduled to debut next week in Frankfurt, show a real "space ship".

At 3.8 metres it's 18mm shorter than the current A1, and 50mm narrower at 1.69m (although 70mm taller) but still has "plenty of room for four people", according to the Four Ring fellers, mostly because it doesn't have a dashboard, centre console or transmission tunnel, and because the seats look as if they came out of an Ikea catalogue (read minimalist, despite the storage trays under the squabs).

The concept, says Audi, has an electric motor rated at 85kW and 270Nm, directly driving the front wheels and fed by a lithium-ion battery that provides a claimed range of as much as 200km, although real-world driving is likely to yield a lot less.

Performance is more than adequate for the Stoplight Grand Prix, with 0-100 in just over nine seconds and a limited top end of 150km/h. Recharging, we are told, will take about four hours from a domestic 220V socket.

Nevertheless, range remains a concern; expect to see a conventionally-powered version - possibly motivated by a version of the one-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine of the VW Up!, or a similar-sized TDI - in the mix.

The A2 has a conventional monocoque steel bodyshell, rather than the (hideously expensive) aluminium space frame of its predecessor, but extensive use of aluminium body panels and carbon-fibre trim components has kept the car's weight down to a quoted 1150kg - about 200kg less than BMW's pretty little i3 competitor.

And just to take us well and truly into the new age - Audi has promised an autonomous driving mode as part of the deal.

Aytoo - come get me!
