Cape Town - As the late autumn chill begins to bite in the Western Cape, some riders clean and polish their motorcycles and hook them up to the battery tender until the south-easter blows winter away in September.
Most bikers just dig out their winter riding gear - and spare a thought for those Capetonians who don’t have warm clothes or blankets to see them through what is predicted to be a cold, wet winter.
Which is why the HOG Tyger Valley chapter, together with Harley-Davidson Tyger Valley, Table Bay Mall and the Blouberg Rotary Club, have arranged a drive on Sunday 13 May to collect blankets and raise desperately needed funds for the less privileged.
But it’s not a Harley-Davidson event - all bikers are invited, no matter what you ride, to join in the mass ride, leaving from Harley-Davidson Tyger Valley at 9am, to Table Bay Mall just off the West Coast Road.
Riders are asked to be at the dealership at 8.30am, for a briefing by the marshals who will be guiding the run down to the mall.
A mass ride always attracts attention, and the idea is both to give the riders a sense of community and a way to give back, and to get the public to join in, to donate blankets and raise funds. Blankets will be on sale directly from the Rotary Club at Table Bay Mall, and donations will be welcome.
Spot prizes will be handed out during the day, and a lucky mom may even win a Harley experience - Sunday 13 May is, after all, Mother’s Day, so bring her along!
