As KwaZulu-Natal’s top cop, Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi faces an investigation by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), there has been a groundswell of support for him.

Aidan David, eThekwini District South African Police Board chairperson and provincial treasurer, has come out strongly in support of the provincial police commissioner, describing him as “a true champion of justice” and “our action man”.

David praised Mkhwanazi’s leadership in tackling violent crime in the province, describing him as a “beacon of hope” for law-abiding citizens.

“Under his leadership, violent criminals have been targeted and notorious syndicates dismantled,” David said.

“He has been relentless in his mission, showing no fear in the face of adversity.”

David’s remarks come amid an ongoing investigation into Mkhwanazi’s alleged interference in the arrest of a senior Department of Correctional Services official in 2023.

While IPID has not concluded its probe, and Mkhwanazi has yet to publicly respond to it, the board and others have voiced support for him.

“Despite the tremendous progress he has made, General Mkhwanazi has faced a relentless onslaught of persecution,” David said.

“The truth is clear: General Mkhwanazi is doing what many would not dare. He is taking on the powerful, corrupt, and criminal elements that have wreaked havoc on our communities for far too long.”

Mkhwanazi’s no-nonsense approach to policing has earned him a reputation for being both tough and effective. Since his appointment, he has led crackdowns on organised crime and drug syndicates, gaining public trust in areas long plagued by criminal activity.

David called on the public to rally behind the commissioner: “As law-abiding citizens, we need to stand beside General Mkhwanazi. We need to protect the protector.”

“We must ensure his work continues, uninterrupted.”
